Rackspace and NASA Launch Open-Source Cloud Platform (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor – Hosting provider Rackspace announced Monday that it’s opening the software code for its cloud infrastructure. “Cloud technology will never look back,” the company proclaimed on its web site, adding that the OpenStack open-source cloud platform will create new technology standards and cloud interoperability. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will add its Nebula cloud technology to the initiative.

Mozilla Releases First of Firefox 4 Betas for Testing (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor – Mozilla has launched an early beta of the Firefox 4 browser and plans to release further betas for testing every two to three weeks. The goal, Mozilla said, is to improve the development process by receiving feedback from developers quickly and getting fixes and changes tested earlier than in previous Firefox development cycles.

Cisco Plans Business Tablet for Mobile Collaboration (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor – Cisco, apparently wondering why consumers should have all the tablet fun, announced on Tuesday a “mobile collaboration business tablet.” The new device, called Cius (pronounced “see-us”), is based on Google’s open-source Android operating system and provides virtual desktop integration with Cisco’s collaboration and communications applications.

Google Chrome Browser Gets a Built-in Flash Player (NewsFactor)

NewsFactor – Users of Google Chrome on Linux, Mac and Windows machines were automatically upgraded Thursday to a new browser version that addresses several security bugs and features a fully integrated Flash multimedia player for the first time. Google Vice President of Engineering Linus Upson believes browser users will benefit in several different ways from Chrome’s integration of Adobe Systems’ Flash technology for the web.

Red Hat 1Q profit rises with revenue growth (AP)

AP – Red Hat Inc. said Tuesday that its fiscal first-quarter profit climbed as demand rose for its open-source software. The company’s adjusted earnings met analyst estimates, while revenue was higher than expected.
